Uranium Oxide Electrodes

Tazglass.

I want to talk a little bit about this glass we developed for violet wand electrodes.  We’ve been doping with different oxides (adding metals to glass formulations), such as cerium and uranium.  Uranium glass used for violet wand electrodes is not a new thing at all; in the early 1900s they were some of the most expensive and rare electrodes for antique violet rays.

They still are very rare and very expensive, if you can find them.  Most are in museums.

We had done some Uranium oxide glass electrodes in 2006 or so, but the glass is hard to find and expensive, and so we tried cerium doped quartz glass.

2 tone violet wand electrode

Working with doped glass produced an amazing 2-color violet wand electrode where the glass glows separately from the gas inside it.  Cerium doped glass is not as rare as Uranium doped glass, so we are able to make them every few years and we have some again now.  The cool thing about this glass is it glows bright blue under UV or blacklight.  Or when used in your violet wand.

Every once in a while we have been able to find some of the rare Uranium doped glass.  We don’t have any Full Uranium doped glass to use for electrodes right now.  The available supply of this glass is all more than 60 years old, and supply has kind of dried up, or gotten far too expensive.

So a geeky kinky friend (Sexual Scientist @sexualscientist) suggested we try some other doping elements.

We tried a Uranium/chromium/iron dioxide mix.  They do glow under UV/blacklight, but not as bright as the full Uranium versions just above.  But the neat thing about this electrode is that the doping creates a much stronger electrode!  You get more than 2x the output.  Right up our alley!

And then our experiments produced TAZGLASS electrodes.  We discovered that this glass is electrically conductive for VW current.  It sparks to you even when you hold it or touch it.  And it heats up against your skin. Two years ago, MasterTaz of Atlanta bemoaned the fact that internal electrodes will ground out.  You can feel warmth and ‘vibration’ and fizzing from normal internal violet wand electrodes, but no full sparks they way you can when electrodes are used externally.  We’ve been working on his request for 2 years, and this glass brought it to fruition. So we named this new glass after Master Taz.  Since these electrodes spark internally, too.

We are still discovering properties about this glass.  It is electrically conductive for VW current and frequency only.  It will not conduct household current.  It heats up.  It too, produces a stronger output than our regular glass.  And we just discovered that this glass throws incredible corona.  We didn’t realize this property at first, because we were only making them with red (neon) gas to help highlight the natural color of the glass.  And the red glow was too bright to see the corona.  But when we made a few in argon, the corona suddenly became visible.  And my mouth dropped wide open.  More glow.  Wide bands of glow.  Not like light, but electrically charged *air* glowing around the electrodes.

When you fire argon Tazglass electrodes up in a violet wand, they throw off a *visible* corona with an astonishing purple glow up to 6-8″ away.  So we’ll be making them with argon now.  So far we have these

snow outsideSnow.  The heavy snowstorms in the east coast in recent weeks did a number on us.  We were ahead of demand through Christmas, mostly because we turned off the Mjolnir website from ordering during the month of December.  Then we were ahead of demand during inventory time in January, and even through Valentine’s Day we made it ahead of demand, though again, I had to turn off ordering from the Mjolnir site for 2 weeks around Valentine’s Day.

Ah, but then the snow started to hit.  And we got behind demand because we had so many ‘snow days’ where the shop was closed.  But we’re working weekends till we get it all caught up, now that the snow is over.  Looking forward to spring?  Don’t get me wrong…I love snow, but I saw the first male robins driving back from work last night and was happy.

But it’s been tough.  I love making these things for you…we all do.  But there are not enough to go around for everyone who wants them, and there’s not enough of us sometimes either!  And I was really tired and drained after working this whole weekend. I have a rule we don’t work weekends, but we had to.  And I never do this either, but after dragging home after work, I stood at the kitchen sink and ate half a sandwich.  Too tired to put the mayo on lol…you’ve been there, we all have.  But I also realized I didn’t care how tired I was…I will never get tired of the discovery of violet wands or making these things for you.  We’ll keep making, and inventing and producing and dreaming up all kinds of delicious deviltry.  Just sometimes it takes a little longer, because ….snow.
